The Order by Rebecca Besser

THE ORDER

By

Rebecca Besser

I woke up and found myself in darkness.

They were all around me.

Their faces were missing, void below their eyes as if someone had peeled away their nose and mouth, leaving a void of rippling skin healed in disfiguring patterns.

They motioned to me in a come-hither way, beckoned me to join them, inviting and beseeching me to be like them, because they could no longer be like me. Their humanity had been stolen from them. Now…they were creatures of the order. Their breath and their smiles had been stolen, leaving them expressionless and barren of voice.

Their eyes were watery…emotional. Their gazes locked on me like I was the only thing of import. Their focus was unnerving; there seemed to be a desperation in their unwavering attention.

They beckoned more forcefully, their eyebrows dipping in the center, between their eyes, into a frown. Their pain fueled anger was like a thick fog in the air.

I shook my head no and took a step back, unwilling to give up my humanity just to appease them. I didn’t want to lose my breath or my voice. The order wasn’t worth it.

The order was based on false safety.

They had failed to see that until it was too late for them.

They moved toward me… Those who were once men, women, and children, now a faceless crowd of obedience. Their alliance was to lies, believing they were safe.

They didn’t understand they were the most at risk… The commander now knew they could be used at will, to whatever end suited the purpose, the order.

They no longer had a voice, after all. They could no longer say no.

I pushed my way through them.

They clawed at my face, my mouth, trying to force me to obey the order, trying to break me with violence and fear. They tried to keep me where I was at their mercy.

I broke free, running through the darkness, toward the twinkle of light off in the distance.

I ran, knowing they were at my heels, knowing the commander wouldn’t let them stop until I too obeyed.

They couldn’t catch me, unable to breathe—their stamina waned quickly.

I broke through the darkness to find a vast open space, warmed by the sun. I breathed deeply and smiled at the people who were there.

They smiled back; they too were still human, they too were free.

I wasn’t the only one who hadn’t obeyed the order.

Bedbugs

By Lee Andrew Taylor

‘NIGHT, NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT AND DON’T LET THE BEDBUGS BITE’

In 1947, around the same time as the so-called Roswell alien landing, another UFO crashed to earth, falling deep within the soil of Lemonsville County. During the night five people were slaughtered, but nothing happened for the next seventy-three-years.

In 2020, an earth tremor shook Lemonsville, leaving an opening for the new killers of the night to attack.

Daniel Boone, the local police chief, must find a way to solve the mystery of why people are being slaughtered or have gone missing. It takes him on a journey to the past, where his grandfather was a witness to the original murders, but, as he tries to uncover what happened all those years ago more and more people are being killed.

But will Daniel work out the link and save the people of Lemonsville, or will he too fall down and be destroyed by the things that want to take over the WORLD…

The BEDBUGS are coming!!!

Author Lee Andrew Taylor

Lee Andrew Taylor was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, in 1969, moving to Bedworth, Warwickshire at the age of 9. All his life he’s had a passion for creating things, whether it was new games to play with family and friends, drawing, or creating a story.

It was 1993 when Lee first dabbled in writing as an adult. He was at college when someone asked if he would enter a writing contest with other students. He agreed, and that’s when the first idea for his killer rats novel – The S.T.A.R.S Project – came about. He wrote around 30 pages and kept the story safe. In 1999, at the age of 30, Lee bought his first computer from a friend and immediately got down to writing a story that was growing inside his head from when he watched his first zombie movie as a child. CLIFTON FALLS – was originally finished in 2001, but wasn’t released until around 2011. It was taken down from sale around 2015 after a few problems with a publisher, but Lee is hoping to re-release it as a 2-part novel in 2021. Since then Lee has written – BEDBUGS (Can you see them?) – A story based on his childhood fear of the old saying – Night, night, sleep tight & don’t let the bedbugs bite – Where he thought the bedbugs were really going to bite him if he didn’t sleep tight.

Both novels are only available in Audio right now but Bedbugs will be re-released around July of 2020.

Lee also writes movie scripts, with the likes of Elijah Wood’s & Joe Dante’s production companies’ asking to read them. He spoke to the director of the Sharknado movies on Skype about his Bedbugs idea and has written a TV, sci-fi, horror pilot for a production company in the UK. He is hoping to write the rest of the TV series when it gets put into production.

What Hell May Come

by Rex Hurst

Based on the untrue writings of the Satanic Panic.

The Satanic Panic was a moral outcry in the United States over supposed “satanic” influence in media that were warping the youth of America. Claims that playing an elf in Dungeons and Dragons could lead to demonic possession, that playing heavy metal music backwards would reveal satanic messages, and that therapists could uncover repressed memories of satanic ritual abuse, were all too common.

Volumes and volumes of material were produced on this fake subject. These texts lead to What Hell May Comewhich takes a look at what the world would actually be like if all of the claims of the satanic panic were true.

Set in 1986, Jon St. Fond’s life is a living Hell. Deliberately abused and neglected by his parents, the only joy he has in life is an escape into a fantasy land of role playing games. Soon he discovers that his parents are part of a secret occult religion with hidden ties all across the world.

As Jon and his friends dig, they learn more of the secret history of the world and discover the power of making deals with creatures from Beyond. However, power has its price, as Jon and his friends quickly discover. One-by-one they begin to become consumed by their own desires and hatreds.

Jon learns there is method behind the madness of his life, as his Father begins to bring him closer and closer into the ways of the cult. Ultimately, Jon must make a choice between all the pleasures of the earth and the future of his soul.

Besser Books Anthologies – Open Calls

Title: For One Roll

  • The stories for this anthology should be the toilet paper equivalent of what would you do for a Klondike Bar, but what would you do for a roll of toilet paper in a world where TP is scarce. Think someone who has a grandma that is embarrassed about having diarrhea and they love her so much they would do anything to get her some TP. Or someone who is tired of smelling bad or has a rash from TP alternatives, etc. Be creative. Be hilarious, but get freaky with some horror too.
  • All stories should have elements of satire (humor) and horror.
  • All stories should have a beginning, middle, and end. Not just a scene and end.
  • Stories should not be political. There can be elements of politics, but should be light in that regard. Your story should not be a political rant disguised as a story.
  • Your story does not have to be about or contain the COVID-19 virus and circumstances, but it can if you so desire.
  • Stories should be 5K+ words (but payment will be the same regardless of word count). No stories under 5K will be accepted.

Payment: $5 per accepted story paid via PayPal and one Mobi copy of the ebook anthology (payment after signed contract is received and Mobi upon publication).

No reprints.

Amazon Ebook (only) will be published by Besser Books (Besser Books & Services, LLC) and edited by Rebecca Besser.

Cover has been commissioned from Arc Book Cover Design.

Title: Isolation: Stay At Home

  • The stories for this anthology should be based around someone who is forced to stay home (for work or any other reason) and some aspect of staying home drives them nuts until they snap. Think dad who is forced to work from home when his employer restructures and his wife’s cat barfs all over his keyboard during a video conference with his top client. Or someone stuck at home having to listen to their child’s favorite CD or movie over, and over, and over. Be creative. Be hilarious, but get freaky with some horror too.

So . . . what am I told?

A familiar small town. A wrathful, metamorphic killer with supernatural abilities. A young girl whose time has come—angel of life, and death—is the only one who can stop his unspeakable deeds.

Katie Franklin has turned twenty-one at last, and been released from the Ransom Sanitarium. And hell has been released with her. Now it’s back to the Val, where monsters are real . . .

Something evil is stalking the shadows of Blackwater Val, and it wants lifeblood and flesh. What she finds waiting in the unhallowed darkness there will forever haunt her—and you. Return with her if you dare. To see the dead children. Feel their torment. To face the old terror.

Author William Gorman

I grew up listening to macabre stories and dark yarns from my grandfather, a magician and former ‘mentalist’ during the last great, fading days of vaudeville, told to me in porch shadows on warm Illinois summer eves. My first book, the best-selling GHOST WHISPERS, was published in 2005 and spawned the immensely popular Haunted Rockford tours and cemetery walks now operating in my hometown. In 2016 my debut novel, a supernatural thriller titled BLACKWATER VAL, was released by award-winning Crystal Lake Publishing. A collection of short fiction and more books featuring murder, suspense, and the vengeful dead will soon follow. The magician may be gone, but the stories remain.

In my spare time I hang around with German shepherds and listen to classic rock & roll. Sometimes I search for old bookshops or magic museums and I linger there, waiting for Neil Gaiman to materialize from out of the dust.
